Late-Breaking Program News Fair Market Prices for United Upgrades?
(Posted: Aug 30, 2002)

Citing that the best customers of Mileage Plus are saying "that upgrades are too complex and not simple to use," United has announced changes to its upgrade policy. Most of these changes won't occur until the first quarter 2003, when United says it will simplify when and where members can use upgrades. The most immediate change is to the purchase and redemption costs of upgrades. These changes begin on October 1 and are as follows:

Purchase Upgrades
Four, 500-Mile Upgrades
Current cost for Premier, Premier Executive, 1K = $125
Price as of October 1 = $200 (60% increase)

Current cost for General Members and other customers = $200
Price as of October 1 = $325 (62.5% increase)

Mileage Upgrades
Eight, 500-Mile Upgrades
Current mileage cost = 30,000 miles
Mileage cost as of October 1 = 50,000 miles (66.6% increase)

North America Award Upgrades -- Y/B Booking Codes
Current mileage cost = 5,000 miles
Mileage cost as of October 1 = 8,000 miles (60% increase)

North America Award Upgrades -- All Other Booking Codes
Current mileage cost = 10,000 miles
Mileage cost as of October 1 = 15,000 miles (50% increase)

International Award upgrades -- Y/B Booking Codes
Current mileage cost = 10,000 miles
Mileage cost as of October 1 = 15,000 miles (50% increase)

International Award upgrades -- C/M/H Booking Codes
Current mileage cost = 20,000 miles
Mileage cost as of October 1 = 30,000 miles (50% increase)

ADVICE: If you are a Mileage Plus member that likes to upgrade, buy what you need for the next year in advance of October 1. Upgrade stickers or awards are only valid for one year -- use them or lose them.

NOTE: These changes will not affect the way you earn complimentary upgrades, or applicable booking codes.

ANOTHER NOTE: United has noted that this is the first increase since 1996. The increase back then? Twenty percent.

FINAL NOTE: Upgrade clearance policies remain the same for 1K (100 Hours before departure) and Premier Executive (72 hours before departure). Premier members get a bonus, as of October 1 they may upgrade 48 hours in advance, and general member and non-members are now able to upgrade 24 hours in advance.
