Late-Breaking Program News INTERNATIONAL - WebFlyer Network Facilitates Red Cross Aid Effort, Miles and Points Donation for Earthquake/Tsunami Victims
(Posted: Jan 5, 2005)

An online donation drive sponsored by FlyerTalk.com?s charity arm, FlyerTalk Cares, and an intensified miles and points donation drive via MileDonor.com have galvanized the frequent flyer community in the wake of the Dec. 26 earthquake-and-tsunami hammering in Southeast Asia. (FlyerTalk.com and MileDonor.com are part of the WebFlyer publishing group.)

The FlyerTalk Cares site, http://www.webflyer.com/redcross.php, pushed past the $17,500 mark as of Jan. 5 thanks to FlyerTalk.com members, who comprise the world?s largest bulletin board/online community of frequent flyers. One hundred percent of donations made through this site will go to the Red Cross International Response Fund, including credit card processing fees, which will be covered by WebFlyer publisher and CEO Randy Petersen.

In addition to monetary aid, the WebFlyer network is also encouraging the donation of frequent flyer miles and loyalty program points via MileDonor at http://www.miledonor.com. A list of airlines, hotels and credit cards that are allowing members to donate from their mile or point accounts is posted there, and will be updated as more programs link up with tsunami aid efforts.

While some frequent flyer programs have no direct line for contributions to Southeast Asia, others such as United?s Mileage Plus are steering considerable efforts in that direction. Members of that plan, for example, can donate miles to the relief efforts of the American Red Cross, AmeriCares, Operation USA, Save the Children and Sarvodaya USA through the Mileage Plus Charity Miles program. In addition, those who provide proof of a cash donation to the Red Cross or one of United's other tsunami aid partners will receive 500 miles for their effort; the airline has already donated 2 million miles.

?All of us at WebFlyer extend our heartfelt sympathies to the victims,? said Petersen, ?and applaud each individual?s attempt to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this devastation.?
