While it's now standard practice for legacy carriers in the U.S. to charge travelers for checked bags, only the budget carriers in Europe have been charging bag fees. But that appears to be changing.
KLM has announced it will begin charging economy class short-haul passengers to check bags on all flights booked on or after April 22, 2013. The fee will be 15 euros to check a bag when paid in advance and 30 euros when paying at the airport. There will be no fee for one carry-on bag and the fees will not apply to passengers on long-haul flights.
Flying Blue elite members, SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus members, travelers on Y or B economy class fares, business travelers flying on a corporate or BlueBiz account will continue to receive one free checked bag. All other economy class travelers on flights within Europe will be charged a fee to check a bag, excluding flights to Georgia, Italy, Turkey, the Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and intercontinental KLM flights.
