When LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines merged to become LATAM Airlines Group, the Chilean anti-trust court required the combined airline to choose one global alliance. Approval of the merger was contingent upon LAN leaving oneworld or TAM leaving the Star Alliance.
LATAM made the announcement today that it will be a oneworld member, which means TAM will be exiting the Star Alliance sometime during the second quarter of 2014 and joining oneworld immediately after its departure. LAN Colombia will also be joining oneworld as an affiliate member in the fourth quarter of 2013.
The addition of TAM and LAN Colombia will add over 50 destinations to the oneworld network and more flights to Latin America. TAM serves 60 destinations in 16 countries and has an extensive network of flights within Brazil. LAN Colombia will add 18 Colombian destinations to oneworld.
