Late-Breaking Program News Virgin Atlantic and Delta Air Lines Partnership
(Posted: Jun 25, 2013)

Delta Air Lines has purchased a 49 percent ownership stake in Virgin Atlantic and beginning July 3, 2013, Delta SkyMiles and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members will receive reciprocal frequent flyer benefits.

Delta SkyMiles members can book Virgin Atlantic flights at delta.com beginning June 29 for travel on or after July 3, 2013 and eligible SkyMiles Medallion members will receive elite benefits when flying on Virgin Atlantic.

Gold, Platinum and Diamond members can enjoy one additional complimentary checked bag as well as priority check-in, baggage handling, security and boarding. Diamond and Platinum members will receive access to the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse when flying on a Delta or Virgin Atlantic operated transatlantic flight to or from the U.K.

All elite members will receive their Medallion mileage bonus and SkyMiles members will earn 100 percent base miles, class of service bonuses and Medallion Qualifying Miles for Virgin Atlantic flights. Members can also redeem miles for Virgin Atlantic flights. Details haven't been announced but we'd guess that mileage amounts will be determined by the SkyMiles award chart and fuel surcharges, which are steep on Virgin Atlantic, will be required. SkyMiles members cannot redeem miles for awards in Virgin Atlantic's Premium Economy cabin.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members flying on Delta will receive 100 percent of miles flown plus class of service bonuses and elite tier bonus miles of 50 percent for Flying Club Silver and 100 percent for Flying Club Gold. Flying Club Gold members also receive SkyClub access when their itinerary includes a transatlantic flight to or from the U.K.; priority baggage, check-in, boarding, security and preferred seating and one extra bag on economy flights.

Virgin Atlantic has a separate award chart for award flights on Delta Air Lines. Flights start at 25,000 miles roundtrip for flights within the U.S. and flights between the U.S. and U.K. are 60,000 miles in coach and 100,000 miles in business/first for Flying Club members.
