Late-Breaking Program News United and US Airways Charge for All Checked Bags
(Posted: Jun 12, 2008)

If you are traveling on US Airways or United later this summer and plan on checking any bags, be prepared to pay extra. Beginning Aug. 18, 2008, United will be charging $15 each way to check a bag when traveling within the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada. The new fee will apply to travelers who purchased tickets on or after June 13, 2008 for travel on or after Aug. 18, 2008. Military personnel, passengers flying in United First or United Business class and United and Star Alliance elite members and their traveling companions are exempt from the new fee.

United is also raising its fees for oversized, overweight and excess baggage fees from $100 to $125. Passengers checking more than six bags will be charged $250 instead of $200 per bag.

US Airways will begin charging $15 to check a first bag for tickets booked on or after July 9, 2008. Dividend Miles Preferred elite members and their companions, Star Alliance Silver and Gold members, First Class and Envoy passengers and active military personnel are exempt from the new fee. Travelers flying on international flights to and from Europe and Asia are also exempt.
