SWABrian

What It Is

SWABrian was the FlyerTalk username of Brian Lusk, Southwest Airlines' official representative on FlyerTalk and one of the most respected airline community liaisons in the history of online travel forums.

Beginning in 2008, Brian served as Southwest's direct connection to FlyerTalk members, answering questions about Southwest, Rapid Rewards, policies, promotions, and customer concerns with a level of transparency, responsiveness, and authenticity that quickly earned him legendary status within the community.

What It Really Means

SWABrian wasn't a corporate representative.

He was proof that a corporate representative didn't have to sound corporate.

At a time when most companies treated social media and online communities as risks to be managed, Brian showed that the best approach was often to simply show up, tell the truth, answer questions, and act like a human being.

His posts were prompt, accurate, complete, and frequently funny. He participated as a member of the community rather than as a spokesperson reading approved talking points. The result was trust—something that can't be manufactured by a marketing department.

Together with the Starwood Lurker, SWABrian helped establish the gold standard for how companies should engage with online communities. They weren't merely answering questions; they were building relationships.

Long before brands hired social media teams and community managers, SWABrian demonstrated what genuine community engagement looked like.

Deep Notes

Southwest Airlines assigned Brian Lusk to FlyerTalk during a period when airlines were still figuring out how to interact with passionate online communities. Rather than maintaining distance, Southwest empowered Brian to participate openly and directly.

Members quickly discovered that questions posted in the Southwest forum often received thoughtful responses from SWABrian himself. He became known not only for solving problems and clarifying policies, but for doing so with a conversational style and well-developed sense of humor.

His success helped validate a model that many FlyerTalk members hoped other travel companies would adopt: knowledgeable employees participating openly under a recognizable identity and becoming part of the community rather than merely monitoring it.

The approach would later become commonplace across social media, but at the time it was revolutionary.

Heritage

SWABrian belongs to the first generation of corporate community representatives who helped define the relationship between travel brands and their most engaged customers online.

Alongside the Starwood Lurker and a handful of other pioneering industry representatives, he helped create a template for authentic social engagement years before “social media strategy” became a corporate buzzword.

For many longtime FlyerTalk members, SWABrian remains one of the finest examples of a company getting online community engagement exactly right.
