Alaska Airlines is making the biggest near-term splash. Starting in 2028, at least 25 of its new Boeing 737 MAX 10 jets will feature 12 lie-flat 'Aurora Suites' in first class and 12 'Premium Reserve' seats—a genuine premium economy cabin with 38 inches of pitch, leg and calf rests, and upgraded dining. These will fly on transcontinental routes (likely Seattle or California to New York/Boston). Separately, Alaska is also upgrading Hawaiian Airlines' business class suites and building new lounges in Seattle, Honolulu, and San Diego. If you regularly fly coast-to-coast, Alaska is the carrier to watch.
For international premium travel, Singapore Airlines is refreshing its inflight dining across all cabins this November, with more than 100 new or refreshed dishes and custom-designed serviceware. The biggest enhancements will be in Suites and First Class. And over in Europe, SAS is opening a stunning new flagship lounge at Copenhagen Airport in June 2027, with hotel rooms, a bakery, barista, and runway views—worth a layover if your timing lines up.
American Airlines is adding a useful digital perk: solo travelers can set a seat preference (aisle, window, bulkhead) in the app, and American will automatically move you to a matching open seat within the same cabin at no extra charge, prioritized by elite status. Top elites (Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey) can also now reserve their complimentary coach snack ahead of time. These won't transform your trip like a lie-flat bed, but they're practical upgrades for frequent flyers.
The bottom line: Alaska is the airline to watch for domestic premium cabin upgrades starting in 2028; Singapore Airlines for best-in-class dining this fall; SAS for a lounge destination in 2027; and American for smart digital tools that make flying coach more tolerable right now.
Bottom line
Alaska is the big story for domestic lie-flats and premium economy starting 2028; Singapore Airlines for best dining this fall; SAS for lounge upgrades in 2027; American for smart digital tools now.
