Late-Breaking Program News Delta Minimum Stay on Close-in Award Tickets
(Posted: Jul 3, 2010)

Effective in August 2010, award tickets on Delta booked within 21 days of departure will require a minimum of a Friday or Saturday night stay.

Exceptions to the policy include awards booked by Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion members and Delta Reserve, Platinum and Gold primary cardmembers. Also exempt are award bookings at the mid or high tier levels.

While other programs have required minimum stay requirements on award tickets in the past, Delta is the only airline to resurrect the policy. Continental, United, US Airways and American do not require a Friday or Saturday night stay on award tickets. Delta's new policy only applies to awards at the lowest tier level booked within three weeks of the flight date so if you aren't an elite member or a SkyMiles AMEX cardholder, you can easily avoid the requirement by planning ahead.
