Golden Tulip Flavours

This program was reviewed and rated by our editors in March 2007. Changes in the program past this date are possible, especially program partner information. We recommend you subscribe to the #1 source of frequent flyer information, Inside Flyer Magazine, to get the most current information possible.

We are always on the lookout for new loyalty programs and recently turned our attention to Flavours, the program of Golden Tulip Hospitality Group. With head offices in the Netherlands and Switzerland, this frequent guest program was introduced in June 2006. Golden Tulip has hotels in 45 countries worldwide and continues to add more hotels and partnerships to their growing program.

EARNING ABILITY:

Our
Rating:

7.00
With Golden Tulip's Flavours, members earn points on eligible rates at participating Tulip Inn, Golden Tulip Hotels, Golden Tulip Resorts and Royal Tulip. Advanced and Silver members earn four points per euro and three points per dollar, Gold members earn six points per euro and four and a half points per dollar (see other currency point accumulation at www.flavours-benefits.com). Points are not earned on taxes, dining and extra amenities purchased during the stay. Flavours members are able to receive points for their room plus up to two additional rooms that are occupied by family members. If you are staying with relatives and take advantage of this offer to triple your points, make reservations in your name for all rooms, request a consolidated bill at check-in and present your membership card at check-out. Relatives are defined as those family members who are "three times removed." Members of frequent flyer programs that have partnerships with Flavours can also choose to earn miles instead of points for stays and must indicate their preference before checking in. The number of miles given for hotel stays varies by airline and hotel. For example, Air France Flying Blue members will receive 500 miles per stay at Golden Tulip and 300 miles at Tulip Inn. Bonus promotions such as double miles for stays are also periodically offered.

Flavours points can be redeemed for hotel stays, hotel vouchers, frequent flyer miles, gifts, gift vouchers and charity donations. You can redeem Flavours points for stays at any of the 230 Golden Tulip Hotels, Inns & Resorts properties worldwide. The amount of points required depends on the room type, date, the hotel type and rate (best available/standard). If you log in and search for a room, the rates and the amount of points needed for an award stay are listed. If you do not have the necessary points for a stay, you can redeem points for electronic hotel vouchers. Vouchers will be sent via e-mail and can be used by either yourself or someone else and are available in the following amounts: [euro]75 or $75 (11,250 points) or [euro]100 or $100 (15,000 points). Vouchers are also available in pounds: #60 (13,500 points) and #75 (16,875 points). Miles can be redeemed for points with fifteen different airlines. All partnering frequent flyer programs offer 2,500 miles for 10,000 points except for the following airlines that for 10,000 points offer: 15,000 miles, All Nippon Airways; 5,000 miles, Air Malta; 3,000 miles, Qatar and Malaysia; 1,500 miles, Japan Airlines and 80 miles, El Al.

Flavours also offers a wide array of gifts and experiences. Some of the redemption options for gifts include a portable DVD player (33,500 points) and a compact mini DV camcorder (87,168). You can redeem 24,634 points to spend half a day with a professional and experienced stuntman who will teach you some tricks of the trade. Whether or not this will lead to a new career is up to you, but you will be filmed and receive a DVD to take home. Previous stunt experience is not required. You can then take your stunt-savvy James Bond self and redeem 62,750 points to bungee jump in the Verzasca valley in Switzerland where the action scenes in "Goldeneye" were shot. If action adventure is not your speed, you can redeem points for a relaxing day at the spa (62,750 points), a cake workshop (13,401), Thai massage (32,750) or an evening of dinner and the theater (87,750) among many other options which vary by location.

Gift vouchers are available in the following amounts: [euro]50 (13,000 points) or $50 (13,100 points), [euro]75 (19,250) or $75 (19,350 points) and [euro]100 (25,500 points) or $100 (25,600 points). The main difference between these and the electronic hotel vouchers is the packaging and the number of points. Both can be given as gifts but if you want to give an actual gift-wrapped voucher instead of an e-mail printout of a hotel voucher, you'll have to redeem a few thousand extra points. Unlike hotel vouchers, gift vouchers can also be used for shopping at Flavours online gift shop. If you'd like to donate points, Flavours accepts online point donations to the United Nations Childrens' Fund (UNICEF).

ELITE-LEVEL PROGRAM:

Our
Rating:

Flavours offers three membership levels: Advanced, Silver and Gold. The Silver level is reached when a member stays 10 times during a 12-month period at qualifying rates in participating hotels and Gold is reached when a member stays 30 times during a 12-month period. Once members receive Silver status, they will remain Silver for as long as they are Flavours members or can be upgraded to Gold. Gold members, however, need to stay at least 30 nights during the last 12 months of their 24-month review period to remain at the highest tier.

Advanced and Silver members will earn four points per euro spent and Gold members earn six points (similar conversions in other currencies). All members receive priority on waiting lists and space available upgrades. Silver and Gold members also benefit from early check-in and late check-out and points that expire less quickly. Gold members receive complimentary access to fitness facilities.

Accumulated Flavours points expire if you do not stay at a participating hotel at a qualifying rate within 12 months of your last stay for Advanced members, 18 months for Silver and 24 months for Gold. The beginning of this time period is the departure date of your last stay. For example, if you checked out on July 1, 2006 and do not stay in another Flavours hotel by July 1, 2007 (Jan. 1, 2007 for Silver and July 1, 2008 for Gold) all of the points in your account will expire. Flavours accounts will be terminated if members do not complete any stays within three years. Flavours points can only be earned by staying at Golden Tulip Hotels, Inns & Resorts and cannot be purchased. Missing points that have not posted to your account can be claimed online for up to six months after your departure date but no retroactive points are given for hotel stays prior to membership. Members must be at least 18 years old.

Questions about the Flavours program can be sent via e-mail. We received an answer to our question within 24 hours, a prompt response considering the time difference. When we called the reservations center, they were not able to give us any information about the Flavours program and suggested we call a participating hotel for more information.

The Flavours Web site has all the information you need to learn how to earn and redeem points. You can register for the program online but you must visit a hotel to get your membership card. After you sign up for the program and login, you can also redeem points for stays, hotel vouchers or miles online. There is an e-mail address you can access if you have any questions and many commonly asked questions are conveniently answered in a FAQ list.

PLUS FEATURES:
Members can earn points for two additional rooms when traveling with relatives, an easy way to accumulate extra points. A valuable benefit of the elite-level program is that once you reach the Silver level, you stay at Silver for as long as you are a member. And even as a lowest-level Advanced member, you receive room available upgrades and waitlist priority.

^top
MINUS FEATURES:
Flavours currently has very few earning opportunities outside of hotel stays. The program is adding a dining partner and has many redemption options available, but points can only be earned by hotel stays or dining.
