Enriching Malaysia

Malaysia Airlines dates back to 1937 and currently flies nearly 50,000 passengers daily to some 100 destinations worldwide. It is one of only seven carriers that has been deemed a five star airline by Skytrax. It does not belong to a global airline alliance although the airline has codeshares and partnerships with airlines from all three global airline alliances.

Malaysia Enrich celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2010. The program started out as the "Esteemed Traveller" program in 1987 and joined the now-defunct Passages program in 1992 with partners Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines (neither airline are still partners). In 1999, the Enrich program was created and currently has more than 1.65 million members in over 240 countries. Membership numbers are the strongest in Malaysia, Australia, the U.K., U.S., Singapore and Indonesia.

EARNING ABILITY:

Members earn miles depending on route and fare flown. International economy fares earn between 30 to 125 percent of mileage flown. Not all domestic economy fares earn miles and the rest earn between 50 and 125 percent of the miles flown. International and domestic business class fares earn 150 percent of miles flown while first class fares for international flights earn 200 percent of the miles flown (there's no first class for domestic flights). As with most programs, charter flights do not earn miles, and R, I, T, N, G, Z, X and certain other types of fares also do not earn miles nor are they eligible for an upgrade.

Members can also earn miles on nine partner airlines, over 50 hotel brands, credit card partners, car rental companies and other partners such as mobile phone, travel, shopping, spas and more.

Enrich members can claim Malaysia Airlines award flights online with dynamic pricing, which means the price in miles will go down or up depending on demand. The program does not have an award chart online. Members must input their desired departure airport and destination online to receive the amount of miles that will need to be redeemed. A flight from Kuala Lumpur two months out from the travel date was available when we searched for 8,750 miles one-way in economy class and 22,500 miles one-way in business class. A one-way economy flight to London from Kuala Lumpur was 21,000, 31,500 or 41,000 miles while business class was 55,000 and first class was 70,000--but all the amounts varied depending on the flight number and date of the flight. Some flights were indicated as sold out. One-way flights to Los Angeles were 45,000 miles in economy and 60,000 in business. Although the amounts are listed one-way, an award must be claimed as a roundtrip because one-way awards are not offered. Airline partners awards are also available.

Upgrade awards are available for economy to business class or business class to first class and the amounts vary. Members are asked to contact the Malaysia Airlines office nearest to you to redeem for upgrade awards. Companion awards are also available which allow members to redeem fewer miles than normally required for a business or first class award for a companion traveling on the same itinerary as you--you must first purchase a business or first class seat and then contact Malaysia Airlines to learn of the number of miles needed to redeem for a companion award.

A miles plus cash option for awards is not offered, however, if you have at least 70 percent of the miles you need for an award, you can purchase the remaining miles needed to claim the award, up to 30 percent. The cost is RM50 per block of 500 miles plus a RM40 service fee per purchase (or local currency equivalents).

Members can also redeem 3,500 miles for an Enrich Voucher worth RM50 that can be used for excess baggage fees or to make in-flight purchases. Golden Lounge one-time access vouchers are also available for 5,000 miles in domestic and 8,000 miles in international airport lounges. MH flight simulator awards are available starting at 30,000 miles for 30 minutes. Miles can also be used as currency at the http://temptations.malaysiaairlines.com online shopping portal.

Redeeming miles for car rentals or hotel stays is not available.
