Rated: October 2010- Delta.com has a new look with inviting graphics and the SkyMiles pages have received some attention from the technology department as well. The member account activity page has been updated and the total number of miles you've earned since enrollment and year-to-date statistics are now present, along with more detailed information in the account activity chart. Delta is in the process of redesigning the award travel booking process and expects to introduce the new functionality in the first quarter of 2011.
The design of the SkyMiles homepage hasn't changed much since we last reviewed the site. A menu on the left side of the screen includes seven links: Join SkyMiles, Book Award Trip, Manage My Account, Use Miles, Buy & Transfer Miles, Ways to Earn Miles and About SkyMiles. You can also log in via a box situated in the top left corner of the screen. The middle of the page includes highlighted bonus offers, and you'll also find links to What's New, Medallions Only and Program Updates.
The registration form barely fills up one screen and it takes only a few minutes to fill out. There is also a box that is automatically checked for you to receive special offers and SkyMiles promotions.
Members can book roundtrip, one-way and multi-city award flights online. One-way is misleading since SkyMiles doesn't offer true one-way awards for half the cost of a roundtrip, but you can combine different classes and award levels and book, for example, one way at the low level in coach and the return at the mid-tier award level in business. You can search for flights online for award travel on Delta, Delta Connection, Hawaiian, Alaska, KLM and Air France. For all other partners, you will need to call reservations and pay the $20 fee (waived for Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion members).
To find out how many miles you'll need for a flight, easy-to-read award charts are located in Award Travel under the Use Miles tab. You'll also find all the different ways to spend your miles under Use Miles, including links to the SkyMiles Marketplace, Donate Miles and Pay with Miles.
If you are more interested in earning miles, Ways to Earn Miles is the link to click. When clicking Earn Travel Miles with Partners, the partners are organized by type, such as Beauty, Health & Wellness partners. Some categories include a long list of partners and you can scroll to the bottom to view them all or select one partner from a drop down menu located at the top of the page.
For a complex program with numerous partners and rules, information is very well-organized. We would like to see Delta add more drop down menus so members can get to information with one click. Right now, it can take three clicks to get to specific information about one aspect of the program. And while we would like to be able to search for all SkyTeam flights online, it is commendable that Delta includes award inventory for four partner airlines. Many airlines restrict online award searches to flights on their own metal.
