Rated: January 2008- Qantas Frequent Flyer is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year and you'll notice a small anniversary logo on the right side of the screen. Graphics are kept to a minimum on the site and provide color and visual interest without cluttering it up and slowing down the load time.
Online registration is quick and residents of Australia and New Zealand are required to pay a one-time joining fee of A$82.50 or NZ$50. Unlike most programs that ask you when you sign up if you want to receive emails and partner offers, Qantas automatically sends monthly eNewsletters and offers from Qantas and Frequent Flyer partners. If you don't want to receive email communication, you can log in to your account and update your email preferences located in your profile. From your account page, you can also view your frequent flyer activity from the past 12 months, update your personal information and view and change existing flight reservations.
From the home page, you can quickly access drop down menus that feature information about Online Services, Member Specials and Program Partners. Online Services includes every possible online activity, such as calculating points needed for a particular flight award, claiming missing points and booking a flight, hotel or car rental award. The drop down menu is a convenient tool, especially if you are visiting the Web site because you want to accomplish a specific task related to your Frequent Flyer points. When redeeming miles for an award ticket, you won't have to go searching for the award booking page.
Frequent Flyer's new online award calendar makes searching for award seats easy. You can select "flexible with dates" when performing your search and view a month by month calendar that will display all available seats for your itinerary and travel class. An added bonus -- the calendar includes some of the award inventory of partner airlines.
Click About the Program and you will find the terms and conditions, which is divided into categories that are listed on one page. You can click the category you are looking for and go straight to the information you want or read through the entire terms and conditions. You'll also find a People's Choice Award link. Frequent Flyers can nominate a Qantas staff member for outstanding service and five winners were chosen from the 3,500 eligible entries submitted last year.
Promotions can be found under Member Specials and are listed by type: flights, hotels, cars and other. An award flight opportunity page lists award destinations with seats currently available. While you aren't guaranteed to find an award seat, the information can help if you are having difficulty finding routes with available award seats.
The Frequent Flyer Web site is well organized and easy to navigate. We would like to see a link to contacts listed prominently at the top. There is a contact list, but it's found on the About the Program page. The award calendar is a nice addition that is helpful when searching for awards, and while it does contain partner airline inventory, not all award flights on all partner airlines are included so you might have to call the service center if you don't find your desired flight.
